Entry for July 16, 2008
I was walking around with a permanent smile on my face all day yesterday. Flexing some hours, I stayed home in the AM and skirted the last of the yearling fleeces, and boxed them up, filled out the order form, and readied them for mailing today to Stonehedge. I talked to Debbie yesterday PM, and she thought it would be about 4-5 months for processing grease fiber into finished yarn. I'm going to let her decide whether to make 2 or 3 ply yarn after they see how the fiber processes. She says that if the lamb fleeces are tippy and break off, 3 ply yarn will make a softer, more pleasing yarn. So by Christmas, I should have my finished skeins back. :^) From 15 fleeces, I ended up with just over 45# of wool to ship. Some of the fleeces required some heavy skirting from VM contamination. (hay from feeding in confinement in late winter) Each fleece also netted about 8oz of tiny, curly, kinky locks that I sorted out, washed, rainbow dyed, and have bagged up to sell separately. So basically, I got 3.5# of quality wool from each lamb sheared. Although I'm happy with this, I know that we could do better with some better management at feeding time, or by finetuning the grazing management to allow for a place to keep the ewe lambs separate from the adults and still be able to graze them in the winter. 2008-07-16 13:29:37 GMT
