Entry for October 14, 2008 ![]() This picture is of the Addison Tollhouse from its website. Chuck and I took off and did a short trip yesterday. We drove into SW PA and followed the National Rd. (Route 40) all the way to Addison (nearly the MD state line), where there is a restored original toll booth. Unfortunately, it was not open for visitors that day, so we just peeked in the windows. Very cool looking stone building. There was a spinning wheel and a yarn winder inside. We also stopped and looked around the outside of another one that was brick, but the same design. Its known as the Searight Toll House. The only other one I can find is just outside of Cumberland MD, in LaVale. Its also brick, and designed just the same. Next trip to the MD Sheep & Wool festival, I want to stop and check it out. We went to Fort Neccessity and looked at the recreated site of the fort, and also the interpretive center. The film done to explain what happened was quite good, and we spent a lot of time there. Then had lunch at an old restaurant nearby - complete with metal chairs, juke boxes at the table, and those funny glass sugar dispensers. We both had hot roast beef sandwiches with real mashed potatoes and gravy - just delicious! Funny - that meal always says VACATION to me. When I traveled to visit my mother's family in Colorado as a youngster, my Dad always ate that, and Mom had chef salads with TI dressing. :^) :^) I would alternate between the two. 2008-10-14 16:14:25 GMT
